Odongdo Island on Yeosu Shore Excursions

01

Odongdo Island | Ten Minutes from Port, a World Apart

Odongdo Island lies 768 metres offshore from Yeosu's city centre, connected to the mainland by a concrete causeway and, for those who prefer it, a small passenger boat from the wharf. The island holds 70 species of endemic plants. Among them is a camellia forest of 3,000 trees that blooms a specific red in January and February. This transforms the island into one of the most photographed winter landscapes in southern Korea.

The lighthouse stands at the island's western point and has been operational since 1904. Nearby, a hillside promenade provides a 360-degree view of the harbour and the Hallyeohaesang island archipelago. We begin most of morning on Yeosu shore excursions right here.

Hyangiram - The Hermitage Built Into the Cliff Face

Hyangiram (향일암, "the hermitage that faces the sun") is built directly into a granite cliff on the southern tip of the Dolsan Peninsula. We can reach this attraction on Yeosu shore excursions within 40 minutes from Yeosu Port.

According to tradition, the temple was founded in 644 AD by the Buddhist monk Wonhyo. Its prayer halls, pavilions, and meditation caves occupy the cliff face itself. In fact, some of these chambers are accessible only through narrow passages squeezed between granite boulders.

It is one of Korea's four most sacred Buddhist cliff-face hermitages, alongside those at Boriam, Naksan, and Bomunsa. The sunrise over the South Sea from Hyangiram is among the most celebrated in Korea.

Suncheon Bay - A UNESCO Tidal Ecosystem

Suncheon Bay National Garden and Wetland Reserve is the largest coastal reed marsh in Asia. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023, it spans 23 square kilometres of tidal flats, estuary channels, and S-curved waterways. The site has also been designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance.

This site is the northernmost wintering ground for the black-faced spoonbill (Platalea minor). It offers critical habitat for 140 migratory bird species. Among them, the black-faced spoonbill remains a high-priority protected species across East Asia.

The reed marsh observatory above the bay offers a view that photographs can rarely capture. Below, the S-curve of the Dongcheon River cuts through a vast sea of reed grass, while tidal channels gleam at low tide. In the distance, the mountains of South Jeolla Province line the horizon.

Boseong County - Korea's Green Tea Country

Located 70 minutes from Yeosu Port, Boseong County produces approximately 40% of South Korea's entire green tea harvest. Its terraced hillsides turn an impossibly vivid green from late April through September, creating a breathtaking seasonal backdrop.

The Daehan Dawon tea estate has been a staple of Korean green tea culture since its founding in 1939. This is considered as Korea's oldest and most visited. Strolling through these fragrant green corridors, visitors can enjoy a quiet moment of calm framed by giant cedar trees and sweeping coastal views.

Unlike Japan's tea regions, Boseong's estates are open for walking without reservation. However, our guided Yeosu shore excursions access the estate's production facility, cupping room, and the specific growing areas most visitors walk past without understanding.

05

Yeosu Food - The South Sea on the Table

Yeosu’s cuisine is shaped by its unique location, where the South Sea meets the fresh inland waters of South Jeolla Province. This distinct geography yields an abundance of coastal seafood and rich agricultural ingredients. It is precisely why Koreans themselves consider South Jeolla to hold the finest culinary tradition in the entire country.

  • Gejang (간장게장): Raw crab marinated in soy sauce, so rich and complex that it is called "rice-stealing seasoning" in Korean.
  • Haemul pajeon (seafood spring onion pancakes) are cooked with the morning catch at the Yeosu Fish Market.
  • Galchi jorim (braised hairtail fish) reflects the deep flavour of South Sea fish that cooks for a shorter season and at a colder temperature than the East or West Sea equivalent.

06.

Returning Korea Visitors

You may already know Seoul and Jeju, but Yeosu represents a completely different side of Korea. It is southern, coastal, and unhurried, deeply rooted in a culinary and Buddhist culture that the capital simply cannot replicate. Let our specialists show you why.

Customer Reviews for Yeosu Shore Excursions

"I had not anticipated Hyangiram at all. The cruise line's description said 'coastal hermitage' and I expected a modest temple with a nice view. Our guide spent forty minutes there and I would have stayed two hours. The gejang lunch was one of the most unexpected culinary experiences of my life."

Patricia & James W.

"The Yeosu cable car over the harbour was a highlight for our children. The Suncheon Bay boardwalk with the spotting scope. The bibimbap cooking class finished the day perfectly. Yeosu surprised all of us."

Anne R.

"We arrived at Hyangiram in the morning. The incense smoke drifted out over the South Sea. No other tourists for the first thirty minutes. Our guide stood quietly and let us experience it. I have visited Buddhist sites across Asia for twenty years. This was unlike any of them."

Everything You Need to Know

FAQs About Yeosu Shore Excursions Before Traveling

Planning a shore excursion in Yeosu can be an exciting way to experience South Korea beyond the cruise ship. Before you travel, here are some frequently asked questions to help you plan your Yeosu shore excursions with confidence

Yeosu is known for its beautiful coastline, islands, bridges, and maritime scenery. Depending on the length of your excursion, you may visit attractions such as Yeosu Maritime Cable Car, Odongdo Island, Yi Sun-sin Square, Jinnamgwan Hall, or Dolsan Park.

A private or customized Yeosu shore excursion can also allow you to combine sightseeing with local food, shopping, or cultural experiences.

The amount of time you need depends on your cruise schedule and the attractions you want to visit. A half-day excursion is generally suitable for seeing several highlights, while a full-day excursion gives you more flexibility to explore at a relaxed pace.

It is important to leave enough time to return to the port before your ship's departure.

Yes. Yeosu is a relatively easy destination for first-time visitors who want to experience coastal Korea. The city combines natural scenery, history, seafood, and modern attractions, making it possible to experience several aspects of Korean culture during a short visit.

A guided excursion can also make transportation and communication easier, especially if you do not speak Korean.

The best transportation option depends on your itinerary. Taxis and private vehicles are convenient for visiting several attractions in a short period, while public transportation may work well if you have more time and prefer independent travel.

For cruise passengers with limited time, a private vehicle with a local guide can make it easier to move between attractions without spending too much time waiting for transportation.

Both options have advantages. Group tours can be a practical choice for travelers who want a structured itinerary and potentially lower costs. Private excursions offer more flexibility, allowing you to adjust the pace, choose specific attractions, and spend more time at places that interest you.

If you are traveling with family or a small group, a private tour can also make it easier to customize the experience.

Yeosu is well known for seafood and coastal cuisine. Depending on your preferences, you may want to try fresh seafood, grilled fish, Korean-style seafood dishes, or local specialties.

If you have dietary restrictions or allergies, let your guide or restaurant know in advance so suitable options can be arranged.

Comfortable clothing and walking shoes are recommended. Some attractions involve walking outdoors, stairs, or uneven surfaces, so practical footwear can make your day more enjoyable.

Because Yeosu is a coastal city, weather conditions can change, particularly during the cooler months. Check the forecast before leaving your ship and bring an extra layer or rain protection when appropriate.

Booking in advance is recommended, especially during busy cruise seasons or if you want a private guide or customized itinerary. Advance planning gives you more choices for transportation, guides, and attractions.

It also allows you to communicate special requests, such as dietary needs, mobility considerations, or preferred sightseeing locations.

Many private shore excursions can be customized. You may be able to choose the attractions, duration, transportation, dining stops, and pace of the tour.

If you have particular interests such as Korean history, photography, seafood, nature, or local culture, mention them when booking so the itinerary can be planned around them.
