Shuri Castle Reopens November 23: What Cruise Visitors in Naha Need to Know

Shuri Castle Reopen Information - Japan Shore Excursions

Shuri Castle’s rebuilt main hall opens to the public at noon on November 23, 2026, after a completion ceremony and a full park closure on November 22. Going inside requires a free 30-minute timed reservation, and adult admission rises from ¥400 to ¥1,000. Cruise passengers should check their port date against these rules first.

Shuri Castle was the royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom, and its main hall (the Seiden) burned down on October 31, 2019, together with eight other buildings. Seven years later, the reconstructed hall is ready to receive visitors again. For anyone joining Naha - Okinawa shore excursions in the coming months, this is good news with a catch: the way you enter the castle has changed, and a few dates behave very differently from the rest.

What is actually reopening on November 23?

The reopening covers one building, not the whole palace complex. It helps to know what you will be able to enter, what is still under work, and which dates change the rules. The two sections below separate those points.

The Main Hall and What Stays Closed

The main hall is the red, multi-storey building at the center of the castle, and it is the part visitors could not enter after the fire. Construction of the new hall started in November 2022, and the exterior was finished in July 2025. Most of the grounds stayed open during the work, so visitors could see the gates and walls while the hall stood behind fencing.

Other lost buildings, such as the North and South Halls, belong to the government’s longer restoration plan and are not part of this opening. Expect to see foundations and construction areas around the hall rather than a finished palace complex.

Key Dates at a Glance

The schedule around the opening is unusual, so a table is the clearest way to show it. Check your port date against each row before you plan anything else.

Date What to expect
Through November 21 Park open with the old ¥400 adult ticket; the hall interior is not available
November 22 Whole park closed for the completion ceremony
November 23, before 11:15 Free area inside the castle walls still closed
November 23, from 11:15 Free area opens; paid area stays closed until noon
November 23, from noon Paid area and the main hall interior open to the public

Will your port day work in Naha?

Cruise itineraries are fixed, so the first question is simply whether your call in Naha falls on a day when the castle is open. Three situations cover almost every passenger. Find the one that matches your ship’s date.

  • If Your Ship Calls on November 22: The park is closed all day for the completion ceremony, so you cannot visit the castle at all. Plan another part of Naha instead, such as Kokusai Street or the Tsuboya pottery district.
  • If You Arrive on November 23: You will reach the castle before the paid area opens at noon, and the free area inside the walls opens at 11:15. That makes the timing of your slot more important than usual. A morning arrival means you should spend the first hours elsewhere in Naha and head to Shuri later.
  • If You Visit Before November 21: You can still visit the park at the lower price and see the gates and the outside of the hall. This is a different experience from walking through the restored interior. It remains a worthwhile look at a World Heritage site, and it is far easier to fit into a short port stop.

Updated Ticket Price from November 23 2026

Updated Ticket for Shuri Castle - Japan Shore Excursions

Adult admission to the paid area of Shuri Castle is ¥1,000 from November 23, 2026, when the main hall reopens (it was ¥400 until November 21). Some outdoor areas, such as Shureimon Gate, stay free and need no ticket. To go inside the main hall itself, you also need a timed reservation, which is explained below.

  • Ticket Prices
  • Adult: ¥1,000
  • High school students: ¥760
  • Elementary and junior high students: ¥370
  • Children under 6: free
  • Groups of 20 or more: ¥800 per adult

You can buy online or at the castle, depending on whether you want to enter the main hall.

  • Online on Webket (official site): Register as a member, then choose your date. This is the only way to book a main hall slot in advance.
  • At the ticket office: Buy a ticket for the rest of the paid area (viewing deck, exhibition rooms and the outside of the hall) at the ticket window on the day.
  • Same-day main hall entry: If slots are left, buy online up to 15 minutes before the slot, or at the Kofukumon ticket office.

Important: Book a Timed Slot for the Main Hall

From November 23, you must reserve a time slot to go inside the main hall (Seiden). Without one, you can still enter the rest of the paid area.

  • Slot length: 30 minutes, and it costs nothing extra.
  • Sales for November 23 to December 31: released on September 1 and October 1, so some dates may already be full.
  • Sales from January 1, 2027: open at 13:00 (Japan time) on the 1st of the month, two months before your visit.
  • Groups: cannot reserve the main hall from November 23 to December 6.
  • Changes and refunds: only for tickets bought on Webket. Main hall tickets can be changed until the day before and refunded until two days before.

How to Get to the Shuri Castle from the Cruise Terminal

Most ships dock at the Naha Cruise Terminal in the Wakasa area, close to Asahibashi Station on the Yui Rail monorail. The castle sits on a hill in the Shuri district, and the last stretch is on foot.

Depending on your berth, the walk to Asahibashi Station is short, and the train to Shuri takes roughly 18 minutes. A taxi covers the same distance in about 10 to 20 minutes depending on traffic, and typically costs around ¥1,400 to ¥2,200 one way. A taxi also saves the uphill walk from the station, which suits families and travelers with limited mobility.

Common Mistakes to Avoid when Visiting Shuri Castle

Most of the trouble comes from assuming the castle works the way it did before the fire. Check this list against your own plan.

  • Planning a visit on November 22 without noticing the full closure.
  • Arriving on the morning of November 23 and expecting the hall to be open.
  • Booking a slot without allowing for the 40 to 50 minute walk from Shuri Station.
  • Forgetting that visitors take their shoes off inside the hall, so a small bag for shoes is useful.
  • Buying tickets from an unofficial seller, which can make refunds and date changes harder.

The reopening of Shuri Castle’s main hall on November 23, 2026 is a real milestone for Naha. For cruise passengers, the most useful thing to do is match your port date to the castle’s schedule, since the park is closed on November 22 and the paid area opens at noon on November 23. The second step is to book a timed slot for the main hall if you want to go inside.
