FULL INITERARY
Port Departure - Meet Your Guide
Your licensed English-speaking guide will greet you at the port exit, holding a personalized welcome board. Begin your journey in a air-conditioned vehicle designed for comfort and convenience.
Ferry to Sakurajima
Depart Kagoshima port with the guide and driver, take a 15-minute ferry ride to the volcanic island of Sakurajima - one of the most active volcanoes of Japan and the symbol of Kagoshima dominating the sea with its mountain often topped by smoke. It was transformed from an island to a peninsula during an eruption in 1914.
Visit Sakurajima Visitor Center

Gain insights into Sakurajima’s eruptive history, lava flow zones, and how local residents coexist with an active volcano. Exhibits and videos offer an engaging look at the science and resilience of the island.
Visit Sakurajima Lava Nagisa Park & Footbath
Take a leisurely stroll along the lava trail, formed by the 1914 eruption. Relax your feet in the free open-air hot spring footbath, with ocean breezes and volcano views. A rejuvenating moment in nature.

Visit Arimura Lava Observatory
We then stop at the Arimura Lava Observatory that gives a view onto Sakurajima's craters from a slight elevation of about 75 meters and the rugged lava field dotted with pine trees. The observation area has a number of lookout points connected by paved walking paths. There are also nice views of Kagoshima Bay from this observation point. Later move to Kurokami Buried Shrine Gate almost completely covered by volcanic ashes during the 1914 eruption, leaving only the very top still visible above ground. This will help you get an idea of how much ash was spewed out of the volcano back then.
*Note: Arimura Lava Observatory is partially suitable for wheelchair users due to the lava trails and unstable volcanic terrain.

Stroll Tenmonkan Mujaki
Return to Kagoshima’s city center and explore the Tenmonkan shopping district, known for its nostalgic local vibe. Don’t miss Mujaki, birthplace of the beloved Shirokuma shaved ice dessert, topped with fruit and sweet beans. Enjoy some free time to walk, snack, or shop at your leisure.
Return by Ferry & Coach to Kagoshima Port
Board the ferry back to the mainland and transfer by coach to the cruise port. Arrive in time for your ship’s departure.
Note:The order of visits may vary depending on traffic and opening hours to ensure the smoothest experience possible.

Wanda A. –
This was our first time in Kagoshima and we weren't sure which excursion to choose. Fiona helped us understand the differences between the available options and suggested this itinerary based on our interests. We were pleased with the choice. The volcano views were wonderful, and the local guide provided useful background at each stop. Would happily consider another excursion with this company on a future cruise.
Robert Mckinnon –
We were looking for a small group tour in Kagoshima rather than joining a large bus excursion from our cruise ship. This tour seemed like a good fit. Sammy was very helpful during the booking process and answered all our questions clearly. The itinerary covered the main highlights of Sakurajima without feeling too packed. What we appreciated most was having a local guide who could explain the history of the volcano and answer questions along the way. A very enjoyable way to explore Kagoshima.
Diana & Robert C. –
Sakurajima is definitely worth visiting when your cruise stops in Kagoshima. The volcanic landscape is impressive, but what made the tour special was hearing about the history and everyday life in the area. The guide explained things in an easy-to-understand way and was happy to answer questions. The schedule was fairly full, but we didn't feel like we were constantly watching the clock.
Heather –
We really enjoyed the Sakurajima tour. The ferry ride was a nice start, and seeing the volcano up close was definitely the highlight. Our guide shared interesting information about the eruptions and how people live around an active volcano. We also liked that the day wasn't just about rushing from one attraction to another. There was a good balance between sightseeing and relaxing.
Ronald B. –
The small group format was exactly what we wanted. It felt much more personal than the usual large cruise excursions. There was enough time to enjoy the views, take photos and listen to our guide. Sakurajima was fascinating, especially the lava fields and the observatory. Would definitely recommend this option to anyone who prefers a more relaxed sightseeing experience.
Bryan –
Fiona was wonderful to deal with from our first inquiry. She explained the tour arrangements, meeting point and what to expect on the day. Booking was straightforward and we received all the necessary information before arriving in Kagoshima. The tour itself was well paced and our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. Everything felt organized, which made the day much easier for us.
Kathryn G. –
We booked this tour after exchanging a few emails with Sammy, who was quick to respond and very clear about the arrangements. The meeting instructions were easy to follow. Our local guide was friendly, informative and attentive to the group's needs. We particularly appreciated having time for photos and questions at the different stops. It made for a comfortable day ashore.
Yvonne –
Serena helped us arrange this excursion and communication was excellent throughout. She answered our questions about the cruise port pickup and return arrangements promptly. On the day, the local guide was welcoming and kept everything running smoothly. We enjoyed learning about Sakurajima and particularly liked the views from Arimura Observatory. Overall, a very positive experience.
Sharon –
What I liked most about this tour was the group size. It was nice being able to hear the guide clearly and ask questions without being surrounded by a huge crowd. Transportation was comfortable and the itinerary covered the main sights we wanted to see. There was some walking involved, but nothing too demanding for us. A pleasant and well-planned excursion.
Jan Day –
Seeing Sakurajima was one of the highlights of our Japan cruise. The landscape around the volcano is quite impressive, and the lava formations were unlike anything we had seen before. The guide's explanations made the experience much more meaningful. We also enjoyed the footbath at Nagisa Park, which was a nice break during the tour. A good mix of nature, history and local experiences.
Kristina –
This was a lovely way to spend our day in Kagoshima. We are not fans of large tour buses or overly busy schedules, so the small group arrangement appealed to us. The stops at Sakurajima were interesting and the scenery was beautiful. Our guide was attentive and made sure everyone was comfortable throughout the day. We never felt rushed, which made the experience even better.
Vanessa –
I contacted Japan Shore Excursions with a few questions about the walking involved, as we were traveling with my parents. Lara was patient and helpful, explaining the itinerary and what we should prepare for. The booking process was simple, with clear instructions. We especially appreciated the relaxed nature of the tour and the opportunity to enjoy the scenery without feeling pressured.
Sciammas Family –
We usually book excursions through the cruise line, but wanted to try a smaller group this time. Felix was responsive and made the reservation process quite easy. The itinerary was clearly explained beforehand, so we knew what to expect. The smaller group setting allowed us to interact more with the guide, and the overall pace suited us well. A good option for cruise passengers visiting Kagoshima.
Keith –
Our guide really added value to this excursion. Rather than simply pointing out the sights, he explained the history of Sakurajima, the volcanic activity and how it has affected the local community. The Visitor Center was particularly interesting after hearing those explanations. We came away knowing much more about Kagoshima than we would have exploring on our own.
Dave & Carol –
Excellent value for a 6-hour shore excursions. Sammy made sure to accommodate our gluten-free request. The guide made it easy to engage with local culture, and we loved the time in Tenmonkan shopping area.
Margaret –
Very comfortable transportation, especially important during a warm summer day. Our guide was funny and informative. The visit to the lava park was more impactful than we expected!
Erika H. –
We felt truly cared for throughout the tour. Our guide shared not just facts, but heartfelt stories about life in the shadow of Sakurajima. The comfort of the ride and the air-conditioned stops helped beat the July heat in Japan.
Janet & Steve –
Fiona handled everything quickly and professionally after our shore excursion booking. This tour had just the right amount of walking and sitting. Tenmonkan Mujaki’s dessert was a refreshing treat after the observatory!
Tomás –
A good mix of natural scenery and local culture. Appreciated that Thomas gave us a full itinerary and emergency contact in advance. Small group size meant we could ask questions freely.
