FULL INITERARY
Port Departure - Meet Your Guide
Your English-speaking guide greets you at port and accompanies you in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle toward the historic town of Shimabara, located along the scenic shores of the Ariake Sea.
Visit Shimabara Castle
Begin your visit at the graceful Shimabara Castle, a 17th-century fortress surrounded by lotus-filled moats and stone walls. Explore the reconstructed five-story donjon (main keep), which now houses exhibits of Christian artifacts, Samurai weaponry, and cultural history. Enjoy panoramic views of the city and Mount Unzen from the top floor - a peaceful but commanding scene.
Visit Buke-Yashiki (Samurai District)
Step back in time with a stroll through Buke-Yashiki, a beautifully preserved Samurai residential quarter. Quiet streets are lined with stone-walled houses, trickling waterways, and tiled-roof gates. Several former residences are open to visitors, allowing you to see tatami rooms, gardens, and antique furnishings - offering a glimpse into Edo-period daily life for high-ranking warriors.
Mudslide Damaged House Preservation Park
Your final stop is at a deeply moving site - the Mudslide Damaged House Preservation Park, where entire homes remain buried under volcanic debris from the 1991 eruption of Mount Unzen. Carefully preserved as a memorial, the park gives voice to the lives disrupted by nature’s force, while showcasing Japan’s remarkable ability to recover and honor its past.
Return to Port
As the Nagasaki shore tour concludes, enjoy a quiet ride back to port with a heart full of impressions, from the grace of feudal Japan to the resilience of its communities.

Eleanor Briggs –
The visit to Shimabara Castle was absolutely lovely with peaceful, well-preserved, and full of interesting exhibits. I especially enjoyed the view from the top floor, where the mountains and town stretch out in all directions. Our guide was attentive and explained everything clearly without overloading us. A very graceful, unhurried day.

Thomas - our consultant was so dedicated. We told him we preferred quieter, historical experiences, and this tour fit like a glove. It gave us insight into samurai culture, natural disaster recovery, and local lifeall in one well-structured outing.
Hiroshi Saito –
I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the tour offered a thoughtful blend of history and reflection. Buke-Yashiki was a highlight for me. I loved seeing the interiors of real samurai homes. The whole group felt calm and engaged, thanks to the great pacing and insightful commentary from our guide.”
Samuel & Deborah Ross –
Booking this tour was a breeze. Sammy, the consultant who helped us via email, was so responsive and kind. She even recommended a nearby café at the port. The tour itself was exactly what we hoped: gentle pace, scenic drive, and rich cultural stops. Shimabara is a quiet gem. Don't miss it.
Beatrice Lemoine –
We loved how this wasn’t your typical city sightseeing tour. Shimabara had a calm, small-town charm that contrasted beautifully with the depth of the history we explored. Our guide was thoughtful, and the coach ride gave us great views of the Ariake Sea. Highly recommended if you're looking for something off the beaten path
Monique Tremblay –
A beautiful mix of elegance and emotion. The castle was grand but serene, and the Mudslide Preservation Park was incredibly powerful. Seeing the buried rooftops was chilling, yet respectful. Our guide handled the narrative with care. Also, the vehicle was super comfortable and air-conditioned, which made a huge difference on a warm day.
Linda Johansson –
The Mudslide site left me speechless. It’s one thing to read about natural disasters, but another to see homes buried as they were left. I appreciate how the tour gave us time to process that moment. Our guide gave us just the right mix of historical context and emotional space.
Daniel Kim –
We were amazed at how atmospheric the Samurai district was. The preserved houses, little streams, and stone paths created a sense of timelessness. Big thanks to Fiona who helped us choose this tour over the more typical city options. We’re so glad we did!
